This trip to N.Y.C. was undertaken to mind the grandkids while their folks prepared for the family’s move to France. We stayed at the Hotel Elysée in Midtown Manhattan & visited Brooklyn just about every day. From the arrival at the taxi stand in JFK, the Big Apple was an assault on the senses. Often it was a case of from the sublime to the ridiculous.
We averaged 8.6 miles per day walking the streets & up & down many subway stairs. The heat, often pushing 90 degrees, plus the humidity, was enervating. But, being with family made it all worthwhile.
This particular blog was inspired by our almost daily 1.5 mile round trip walk to JUMBO Bagels. Our path was often at morning rush hour. Starting in midtown between at 54th & Madison & walking east towards 2nd & 56th we noticed different folks hustling to work by foot, subway, bus, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle…. The dress was amazingly casual. Backpacks or big shoulder bags along with ear buds or head phones & often water bottles, seemed to be de rigueur. There were plenty of food stands available for a quick breakfast stop along the way.

Arrived at work for a morning huddle.
Waiting for work.
At work.
Bloomingdale's had just opened its doors.
The Franklin subway stop in Brooklyn usually had two NYPD police officers hanging out. For several days there were officers in military camouflage carrying sub-machine guns. We never found out why.
Prospect Park rangers capturing a sick racoon.
A pleased Manhattan waiter.
We were gawking through the Gucci store window at a sparkly girl's dress. The guard signaled to invite us in. The salesman had to do some research to discover that the price was, as he said, "27 50." I doubt he meant $27.50!
These fellows made a lot of noise with music blaring from their speakers.

Our morning destination, JUMBO Bagels. We came home with two dozen.
"Nothing compares to that sweet bagel smell that emanates from a classic wood fire oven at NY Jumbo Bagel. And when it comes to taste, well, the flavorful, fresh, and deliciously chewy iconic jumbo bagel stands alone."

Ash, from Allied Security knew where Bogardus Park was (our destination for a walking tour) & walked us through the subway station labyrinth to the closest exit. Allied has a contract with the NYC Transit Authority. They're there just to make folks think twice before jumping the turn style.
