The red “frames are part of an art project implemented in 1998 called ‘Framing Union Square.’… Artist Mary Miss (with the help of architect Lee Harris Pomeroy) was commissioned to create an installation that would pay tribute to the old Union Square hub of 1904, one of the city’s original 28 subway stations. With 115 frames distributed throughout the 14th Street complex, it’s virtually impossible not to encounter one.; ‘look below the surface to see a ‘slice’ of the station, its structure, [and] its history.’” Of course, we had learned about this in a MAS class.
