It seems like the times they are a changin’, finally. We’ve continued our online learning. We had signed up for a semester of Swing University through Jazz at Lincoln Center We were introduced to the history of jazz, many new musicians & fine instructors. The Municipal Art Society NYC (MASNYC) virtual tours have been outstanding & whetted our appetites for our next adventure in NYC. And, I’ve enjoyed several NY Transit Museum presentations.
We’ve been getting out but now we can do even more & meet with our vaccinated friends. Having two Pfizer vaccinations in our arms has made us feel safer, yet we are still cautious.
As David Brooks wrote in his NY Times column on April 2, 2021 (thanks Mary M. for suggesting we read this column), “I’ve found I’ve burned out on my screens, burned out about the politicization of everything, and have rediscovered my love for the New York Mets. People who have endured an era of vulnerability emerge with great strength. I’m also convinced that the second half of this year is going to be more fantastic than we can imagine right now. We are going to become hyper-appreciators, savoring every small pleasure, living in a thousand delicious moments, getting together with friends and strangers and seeing them with the joy of new and grateful eyes.”
Look carefully at the signs that follow because some are hard to find in the photos.

Robert Zimmerman - "Bob Dylan’s Greenwich Village" - MASNYC Tour With Robert Depczenski
Alan Lomax said "If you want to get out of America, go to Greenwich Village."
Dylan’s former recording studio is now available as two commercial spaces. Both levels served as the studio, where he created songs for the album “Blood on the Tracks,” including the songs “Tangled Up In Blue,” “You’re Going To Make Me Lonesome When You Go” and “If You See Her, Say Hello.”

"QUEENS: The World's Borough & How It Got That Way. 1898-2021" - MASNYC Jan. 30, 2021.
“Queens is both the largest borough of New York City and the second most populated. Queens is also notable for being the most ethnically diverse urban area in the entire world, representing over 100 nations and speaking 138 different languages.” Not when I grew up there!
The songwriting team of Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry (Chapel of Love, Be My Baby, Da Doo Ron Ron, Leader of the Pack, River Deep, Mountain High) lived in Lefrak CIty. The rapper Prodigy lived there as well. Mrs. Sendek wouldn’t sell her home & Macy’s built around her.
My neighborhood of Kew Gardens Hills wasn't like this when I moved out in 1969.
One of the many songs that I have learned & gotten to play on the ukulele with the Wednesday night Morristown Uke Jams. Dan Hicks was a local Marin County (Mill Valley) guy.
A MASNYC subway art tour with Phil Desiere. We've taken real live ones with him during our NYC sojourns.
We appreciate his discussions of the artist & how the work was done.

I heard the engine come to life but this muscle car never left the driveway.
I once had a NISHIKI bicycle but never a LAND ROVER Defender nor an Austin Healey.

A 90 y.o. fellow who came to check out the commercial property he owns on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. He was happily vaccinated.
2/11/21, happy moment; our first vaccination, down at the San Mateo Exposition Center.
"Party" atmosphere with a little Harry Belafonte in the background as we waited our requisite 15 minutes.
Nomi noticed this on one of her walks.

We were cooking with saffron. I asked Nomi where did saffron come from? She said, “Let's take a walk to the Marin Art & Garden Center & we'll have a crocus tutorial.” It comes from the filaments. Turns out we had plenty of crocus flowers in our garden.

We've taken many classes during our semester of Swing University from Jazz at Lincoln Center. We didn't know anything about Clark Terry. Wow. Was he good. He "...was an American swing & bebop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, & a composer & educator."
And many presentations from the New York Transit Museum. Here's the B'klytn Battery Tunnel post hurricaine Sandy.
This Fisker hybrid auto was pointed out to me. I had never heard of it. Note the solar panels on the roof.

Another MASNYC subway art tour with Phil Desiere. We had seen this mosaic, one of my favorites, before on a live tour with Phil.
Jazz 101 with Seton Hall of the Swing University. Here he was explaining how the instruments & their positions in jazz bands evolved.

Now scheduled for an April reopening...
What a wonderful podcast & now book.
The authors of "The 99% INVISIBLE CITY" write about these sidewalk impressions by contractors. Some locales no longer permit them because they are deemed "free advertising." I've seen a Ghilotti one from the early 1900's but it was too faint to photograph.
Mars & Kohlstedt also have a section on manhole covers.

The holidays keep coming.
Who knew that Floyd Bennett Field in B'klyn had a NYC Sanitation Dept. Training Facility. I guess you have to learn how to handle & maintain those garbage trucks somewhere. Seen on another MASNYC virtual tour. There's an air museum, tent camping area, kids indoor play area, ... & you can drive on the runways. Cool.
And the Bon Air Bridge restoration project continues.
San Francisco. This was once a Decorator Showcase House. From its living room windows we saw the QE II sail under the Golden Gate Bridge.
In another MASNYC presentation, by Lucie Levine, we learned that the Bronx based Piccirilli Bros. made many sculptures in NYC; from the lions in front of the 42nd St. Library to the statues in the Washington Sq. Arch. They did the Lincoln Memorial statue in D.C. It was all done at their studio in the Bronx.

Larry is one of our favorite musicians. We discovered him during the pandemic & watch his weekly YouTube shows. He's a wonderful musician & teacher. Larry's 85 y.o.a & seems to have played with "everyone."
