We were staying in midtown Manhattan for this visit to N.Y.C.

“In a city where many aspects of our social lives are shaped by real estate and economic forces, architecture can play a vital role in fostering participation and belonging.”
c. 2013, this book is a wonderful resource & souvenir of NY architecture.

111 West 57th Street by SHoP Architects (2022) “is the skinniest skyscraper in the world with a staggering ratio of 24:1…”
“…And it has only one condominium per floor.”
Seen on the right, 432 was one of the first supertalls.
“At the time of its completion in 2015, 432 Park Avenue was the third-tallest building in the United States and the tallest residential building in the world.” This is no longer true.
As seen in May 2023 from the Roof Garden of the MET.
432 Park Ave., that I’ve mentioned before in blogs, is the tall one on the left.
For comparison, May 2013 with 432 Park Ave. 2 years from completion.
The supertalls pencil thins/super slenders...have become a concern for New Yorkers. For example, the under construction apartment tower at 262 5th Ave. will block everyone’s views of the Empire State Building from the south.
Oct. 26, 2023, the NY Times had an article “When the Skyscraper You Hate Blocks the Skyscraper You Love.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/25/arts/design/empire-state-building-views.html

“270 Park Avenue is set to be the new state-of-the-art global headquarters for JPMorgan Chase.”
“The 1,388-foot (423 meter), 60-story skyscraper will be New York City’s largest all-electric tower with net zero operational emissions and exceptional indoor air quality that exceeds the highest standards in sustainability, health and wellness.”
Later in the day. Note that interesting contraption that’s laying the diagonal metal.
“The new building will house up to 14,000 employees.”

Seen from 5th Avenue.

HSBC THE KNOX BUILDING The c. 1901-02 façade is preserved at the base of the skyscraper - 452 Fifth Avenue.
“THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST BEAUX ARTS COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS IN NEW YORK CITY. IT IS DISTINGUISHED BY ITS LIMESTONE RUSTICATION AND TWO-STORY MANSARD ROOF. IT WAS DESIGNED BY JOHN H. DUNCAN AS HEADQUARTERS FOR THE KNOX HAT COMPANY. IN 1964-65 THE FIRM OF KAHN & JACOBS CONVERTED THE HAT STORE SPACE INTO BANKING FACILITIES.
