The idea for this excursion began after one of us read about El Garage in Richmond, CA https://www.elgarage.online/ & their birria tacos. Birria tacos are a dish originating in Jalisco, Mexico. From Steve & Mike’s “i am a food blog:” “Birria tacos, if you haven’t heard of them yet all over social media and the internet, is traditionally an addictive sweet, sour, slightly spicy, and utterly savory Mexican beef stew that’s slow cooked until the beef is tender and fall-apart juicy and delicious. Someone had the bright idea to stuff this beefy goodness into a taco shell, and then dip the whole mess into the stew and fry it up.” That was just the impetus. While in the East Bay of course we had to check out Boichik Bagels in Berkeley. Of course something was needed at IKEA in Emeryville & Ranch 99 in Berkeley & Snappy suspected that this might be a photo opportunity.
Berkeley architecture is in a class all by itself. Most of the single & multi family dwellings encountered are beautifully painted and maintained.
From Ira & Carol Serkes Berkeley Real Estate Specialists: (Italics mine)
”Berkeley is filled with distinctive buildings. You’ll frequently see Berkeley bungalows, Italianate, English Country Cottage, Tudor, Spanish Med, Craftsman and Brown Shingle homes since much of Berkeley was built up in the early 20th Century. Famous architects such as Julia Morgan, Bernard Maybeck, John Hudson Thomas, Leola Hall, Walter Ratcliff, and John Galen Howard have made their mark on our homes, public, and commercial districts.”

One of the most imposing Victorian-era homes in Berkeley, the Boudrow House at Sea Captain Corner was constructed in 1889, when Berkeley, whose population then numbered about 12,000, was a favorite retirement spot for mariners.
The house was built for Charles C. Boudrow (c. 1830–1918), a Massachusetts-born master mariner who was for many years a shipping magnate in San Francisco. It was designed in the Queen Anne-Eastlake style by the noted San Francisco architect Julius E. Krafft (1855–1937). Valued at $3.3 mil, In 2008, it was acquired by the Minerva Foundation as a residence for visiting scholars.
