American Folk Art Museum - We had read about this exhibit in a recent issue of the New Yorker. “ Shaker craftsmanship has long been celebrated for its ingenuity Designed to hang from a peg rail, this elegant hanging shelf can easily be moved from one wall to the next. The mobility of such objects speaks to Shaker values of adaptability and detachment from material things.”
“Cane-Seated Tilter Side Chair
c. 1840-1860
Birch, cane, Iron, leather
Furniture produced by the Shakers is known for its economy of forms. Guided by their religious beliefs, Shaker craftsmen embraced simplicity and utility over complex forms and decoration.
This side chair, produced In the Enfield. New Hampshire. community, highlights this design sensibility through its simple "candle-flame" finials, crescent-shaped slats, and Ingenious wooden tilters on its rear legs. Tilters are a Shaker invention that allows the sitter to tip the chair backward without slipping, damaging carpets, and scratching floors.”
“William F. Winter gained access to the cloistered Shaker communities in Watervliet and New Lebanon, New York, beginning in 1923 and photographed members and their material world.
His photographs depicting sparsely decorated and unpopulated interiors suggest they were rooms recently left by a group of Shaker brothers and sisters. However, Winter staged the scenes in unused buildings. Focused on compositional balance, clean lines, and narrative potential, these modern-looking images influenced mainstream perceptions that the Shakers were one of the progenitors of modern American design.”
